A Generation of Vipers with the Patrick Bateman Shimmy.

A few years ago, Bret Easton Ellis wrote a book called American Psycho. It was about a psychopath called Patrick Bateman who killed people in horrible ways with no remorse whatsoever. The book was roundly condemned, often reviewed as without merit of any kind. The result was that it flew off of the shelves and made the author a pot of money. It later got made into a film with Christian Bale.

In recent times we’ve seen some disturbing characters come down the pike. From Charles Manson on we’ve had an epidemic of serial killers. We’ve had the celebrated cases of John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dalmer and Ted Bundy. Then there have been the Menendez Brothers and O.J. Simpson. A certain personality type has become commonplace in society and spans the gamut from the very poor to the obscenely rich. This personality type is defined as a Psychopath. They’ve always been around but never so many as today.

(Yes, I know the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath and we’re going to go with psychopath for the purposes of this essay.)

It’s a common misperception to believe that these types are exclusively confined to areas of criminal behavior, usually resulting in murder, though often engaging in other crimes against person and society. The fact is that these types often move through life without ever being directly engaged in ‘obvious’ criminal enterprise. But one thing you can be sure of, they hurt other people. They enjoy it. It makes them feel good; if they actually feel anything at all.

My interpretation of a psychopath is a person whose reptile brain has murdered their conscience. This is their first offense and it is against themselves. Some seem to have been born this way. Some are forged out of their environment at the hands of their parents and other forces. It’s my belief that they are predisposed in this direction. Many of us have suffered greatly but we don’t turn out like that. Often our suffering makes us into better people than we might have been.

For some reason, at certain times, these psychopaths flower; the earth has the right chemical balance, there’s the right amount of sun and rain and so on and so forth. I’d blame materialism but that’s my take.

Bush and Cheney, Rumsfield, Wolfowitz, Rice, Libby and their financiers... they are all psychopaths. The radio talk show hosts; celebrities of every stripe, bankers and lawyers, doctors and priests, academics and accountants, scientists and mine owners, stockbrokers and New Age guru’s. You can find psychopaths in every field working for the one objective that is the focus of them all... self interest; and woe to those who get in their way.

Often they work alone. Not infrequently they band together; in business, politics and religion. They take language and they give it their own meaning. They smile a lot and they are very engaging. You’ll get the same smile when they sell you your house as what you get when they take it away from you. It’s all the same to them. In their minds everyone is fair game and everyone is, or should be, working for them.

They see the thousands dying in Iraq; the people suffering in Darfur, Palestine and much of Africa as something akin to animals who do not feel pain as human’s do- not that that would matter. They see economic possibility; “Okay people, let’s think about how we can get some aid money for these people and then invest it in that sub prime hedge fund and then sell it to the Europeans and Asians.” Or, “You know, it looks to me that the Janjaweed could use some better weaponry but first, let’s put some pressure on Congress to intervene so we can ratchet up the conflict and increase the need.”

On and on it goes, centuries of suffering; tens of thousands impaled on stakes, thousands sealed still alive into walls as if they were some sort of strange mortar, hundreds of thousands starved and tormented behind razor wire. We always look back and think how uncivilized they were. We believe that we are civilized in our cities, in our suits, moving though the corridors of the workplace, making money- gambling on disaster and mathematical fluctuations where no matter what happens you're okay if you bet right.

Wars created for no other motive than profit and stock exchanges filled with expensively dressed men and women buying and selling, based on commodities dependent on death and destruction, with lawyers and accountants to handle their affairs except for the ones they're having in their townhouse on the nights they don't go home to Westchester or Greenwich.

People bopping down the street with the world sealed away by ipods and cellphones, drowning in entertainments designed to focus their attention on their own needs. When the screams become too loud they can just turn up the volume.

People in cafes and diners celebrating the murder of endless scores of people who had no part in the condition created out of lies to justify their good fortune in being innocent bystanders and collateral damage; people who see people as numbers, people detached in a nation of sociopaths who drive by people living in cardboard boxes in the richest country on earth where tens of thousands of children are working the streets as prostitutes, where the easy flow of opiates is guaranteed by the protectionism of the Afghan war whose profits flow into the accounts of the same people in suits who bet right, invested right and "if I don't do it somebody will." Money has no conscience and neither do they.

These are just a few of the thoughts that run through my mind while I trace the dotted line as it weaves from point A to point B and beyond; a tortured highway of connections between a piece of paper signed in one place that, a week later, activates an army of Patrick Batemans because that Patrick Bateman signed the paper on instructions from his banker who is also Patrick Bateman.

Some people think this is funny. Some people think this is business as usual and some people think it's none of their business. Maybe it's none of my business either in this generation of vipers.

Screwing over the competition, driving the competition out of business, forcing new businesses into economic peril with the assistance of complicit bankers and then buying up someone’s dreams for a song... this is considered smart business. You get patted on the back. You get oral sex from the children of the people you ruined and everyone laughs and has a martini. Yes, it’s that bad.

The corporations don’t have to worry. When they overextend and threaten the survival of an entire country, the banks, with the people’s money will bail them out. You see it every day. The rule of law, that instrument which guarantees fair play and equitable conditions that punishes evil doers? Justice is a decision in their favor. Justice is blind because they put her eyes out. Then they tore her clothes from her body and used her and then sold her to a McBrothel. When she can’t perform any longer they’ll juice her into Soylent Green frappe and sell her at Starbucks.

It’s got to be the nature of the system. It’s got to be that the system got progressively altered over time until it was a willing whore for corporate interests. Once that was established then everything from the education industry to the music you hear was all tailored toward creating a nation of Patrick Batemans who are conditioned not to care about anybody but themselves.

It’s a hard road you’ve chosen and it grows darker by the day. With no one to stop it, it runs straight up to the gates of Hell. (A TV game show buzzer sounds.) “Shut up Cassandra, nobody wants to hear that crap.”

Official Code of Georgia Annotated, Section 50-12-130
Statutes and Session Law

The General Assembly finds and declares that:

(1) During the period from 1933 through 1945, six million Jews and millions of other Europeans were murdered in Nazi concentration camps as part of a carefully orchestrated program of cultural, social, and political genocide known as the Holocaust;

(3) It is desirable to educate our citizens about the events leading up to the Holocaust and about the organizations and facilities that were created and used purposefully for the systematic destruction of human beings;

(5) Programs, workshops, institutes, seminars, exhibits, and other teacher-training activities for the study of the Holocaust have taken place during recent years at various middle schools, high schools, colleges, and universities in this state; and

(6) It is desirable to create a permanent state commission which, as an organized body and on a continuous basis, will survey, design, encourage, and promote implementation of Holocaust education and awareness programs in Georgia and will be responsible for organizing and promoting the memorialization of the Holocaust on a regular basis throughout the state.

Georgia Law

And, from the state of Missouri statute web page:

5. The term "holocaust" shall be defined as the period from 1933 through 1945 when six million Jews and millions of others were murdered in Nazi concentration camps as part of a structured, state-sanctioned program of genocide.

Missouri Law

Genocide of a people is a repugnant act. But mandating the teaching of only one genocide is not the way to educate our young. Deliberately leaving out portions of history only ensures ignorance.

Does this law forbid the teaching of the Armenian Holocaust? Or the genocide of the Native Americans? If so, does that mean it is
VERBOTEN to teach about other holocausts?
If a teacher does try and educate his/her pupils about other genocides, will they be disciplined?

What's the next state law regarding the Holocaust Industry--copyright applied for? The law that says no other holocaust shall be discussed, wrote about, or taught? Any and all violations of this law will be punished by law?

How many other states have this odious piece of legislation?

Hear! Hear! and Hear!

Now compare and contrast these two news items from the Toronto Star:

Food bank cash crunch has wolf at the door

The shelves may be stocked but the landlord is looming and the Foodpath food bank in Mississauga is scrapping for help.

"Once we pay this month's bills, there will be nothing left," said Lorraine Hemond, the bank's administrator. The charity, which helps feed 5,500 people each month, is facing closure "depending on how long the landlord would let us go without paying the rent."

Foodpath was recently commended in a Star investigation on charities because it relies almost exclusively on volunteers, and most of its half-million dollar budget goes into buying and distributing food.

The charity supplies breakfast programs and half of the people it feeds are children.

About $3 can feed one person for up to 10 days, Hemond said. The bank provides canned foods, fresh meats and produce to families...

Food banks begin to fare better when thoughts turn to turkey time. Until then, summer is tight.

The Daily Bread food bank [in Toronto] has 20 per cent less inventory than the average, said Michael Oliphant, director of research and communications. The demand for canned food is constant throughout the year, but when people go on vacation, donations dwindle.

The Daily Bread has to spend more of its resources on basics like peanut butter and rice – which can strain funds for rent.

Loren Freid, executive director of the North York Harvest Food Bank said many food banks resort to drives during the summer. Often, they take some of the bounty reaped when philanthropists' hearts are overflowing with holiday mirth, and set it aside for the financial drought of the warmer months.

http://www.thestar.com/article/249431

------------

Meanwhile as these Toronto and area "Banks" are perpetually cash-strapped and have to perpetually resort to begging, um food-raising drives, other Banks in the same neighbourhoods are awash in money. And yet the $1.4 Billion in Profit as reported by one Canadian bank for this fiscal quarter is UNIMPRESSIVE to some!

RBC's 19% profit jump fails to impress analysts

Bank earns $1.4 billion (in this quarter) but overall results `pale' to TD's performance in turbulent market

godsend, sorry, but that is cold comfort.

I'm trying to imagine saying something like that, what you just wrote, to say a hungry or a homeless person. Or to someone who's just lost their house or their job due to
"downsizing" or Bankruptcy...or how about to someone who's just lost a loved one, or how about a limb... due to Western domination/interventionism aka
globalization in say Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Bolivia, wherever...

I'm not trying to be pissy or cynical. Or maybe I am just another annoying Cassandra? I do get a lot of "Annemarie, you know sometimes you're a real downer. Can't you just have fun and enjoy the movie/barbecue/event/afternoon/whatever
without bringing up depressing topics?"

I don't know wo/man. For example, I love Les Visible, what he writes, what he stands for. Still, I can easily and clearly see that Les and a mere few like him are but a handful of loving drops in an ocean full of hateful, toxic waters...And I can tell that LV is for real.

Hey "godsend", hold on a second! I just visited your web site, novalight. I copied these words from there:

(tell others about this website - the ONLY website with the WHOLE TRUTH)

So, you state that YOU have a lock on the Whole Truth? Merciful Jesus!

Seems that you are a Bible Fanatic. And maybe even a Rapturist? Do you pray for Armageddeon? A bloody Apocalypse?

Sorry wo/man. You blew it. You get Zero cred with me now.

Peace...if WE can make it!

btw, in the interim between writing this and posting it, S.A. Homes posted this:

"No matter how strong the wind of evil may blow, the flame of truth cannot be extinguished."...His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso

-- btw, I have no problemo with this, in fact it resonates deeply with me. Still, I don't imagine that even the revered (by multitudes) Dalai Lama would claim to have a monopoly on the whole truth. In fact were he to utter something so ludricrous I imagine that plenty of his followers (I'm not one btw) would be outraged! Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, about any of this.

Well, Annemarie or Anonymous poster of the 2:20AM post, ThankYou for bringing my website to the attention of all the listeners and lurkers on Les Visible's marvelous Blog!

You SEE!, every little bit of truth and exposure of evil helps in the spiritual warfare between the Sons of Darkness and the Sons of Light (Daughters are also included!). When you add up all the little bits of truth, you eventually wind up with the Whole Truth and nothing but the Whole Truth, so help you, God!

I take it that you are inclined to disagree with the 'so help us, God' part, right?

Let me assure you that God is part and parcel of the Whole Truth. In fact, God (Jesus the Christ) IS Truth - and Light and Life and The Way. God is also Spirit and Holy.

I know this may be a lot for you to absorb all at once, so here's a suggestion:

Go back to my website and study it thoroughly - ALL of it. As you study it, makes notes on everything you SEE there that you think is NOT Truth. (that should take around 6 months or so - if you include the links, and the links are VERY important).

Come back here in 6 months with some proof of all the non-Truths on my website and I'll do my best to convince you otherwise.

Meantime, let's get to the root of Evil and strike it!

Les,

Looks like it's time to change the format of this blog to a discussion forum! Or is there a difference? I dunno. Anyhow, we're all rolling around on the floor grappling with this "life" madness in our own ways(sometimes literally), trying the strategies and tactics we think will work best to get us on top, or that just help us avoid getting ourselves pinned, depending.

Combat-oriented metaphors fit so well in describing life in general, and everyone instantly understands them. There is probably a good reason for that. Looking at nature the way our culture does, on television, gives the impression of ceaseless conflict- that the biggest and the baddest and the sharpest of tooth and claw thrive and the rest must run and hide and hope they don't get caught, but that they all eventually will. This makes for "good" TV, as it's very visual, just like car chases and murder. It also makes for a short-lived ecosystem.

The nature you see when you are outside in nature tells a different story, one that would bore a television audience to tears. Look how hard Steve Irwin had to work, jumping around on his show like a carnival barker struggling to hold our attention, to try and show a TV audience a slightly more accurate representation of nature in an effort to de-fang the old paradigm of predation as the Ultimate Relationship.

Anyone spending appreciable time in wilderness will quickly realize that the Ultimate Relationship is symbiotic, followed closely in second place by the Penultimate Relationship: parasitic. Predation is a distant third. There are countless cases of pairs of different species, often from different Kindoms, that form biological alliances that help both survive and prosper better than each could alone. These are the "less visible" aspects of nature, the ones that never make it on TV, but without which life does not exist.

Parasites depend on another species, but contribute nothing to the relationship, which makes them less resilient than symbiotic pairings (and unlike predators; the distinction is subtle- parasites don't "strengthen the herd"). Parasites also give up much freedom in exchange for the ease of living off the efforts of the host, something perhaps appropriate and not a big deal in nature but a fact often overlooked within the human equivalent.

Les, your idea of a psychopath being one who's reptile brain murdered their conscience is very compelling (and another violent/combative metaphor that is easily understood). We all have that reptile mind inside us, and it is a very useful tool sometimes. Psychopaths use that tool exclusively, it seems, and the worst become the celebrated serial killers and mass-murderers. By "celebrated" I mean they fascinate many in the same sense as when people slow down to gawk at car accidents even as they are repelled by them. Most of the psychos, however, become passive-aggressive parasites. It is better for a parasite that the host not know it's there, or the host might try to end the relationship, as it should.

All this Puzzling Evidence comes together to paint a peculilar picture. When a susceptible individual with an underdeveloped or missing conscience has been spoon-fed the survival-of-the-sharpest/most ruthless lie their whole lives, and is isolated from others whom they might have developed symbiotic relationships with, it's no surprise to me that that individual becomes a threat to those around them. They think they're predators, as there is something noble and powerful about true predators, but they are merely parasites, and are only aware of the freedom they gave up in a subconscious way, but it's enough to make them bitterly dangerous.

Television boosted this devolution greatly, with vast numbers of people suddenly (historically speaking) isolated in their own little boxes like never before, mesmerized by the flashing lights that constantly radiate a cold and false vision of how the world works. The internet may well finish us off in this respect, as it increasingly provides the added delusion of 'connecting' with people even as we increase our isolation: "I have 2000 friends on MyMask, er, Space!" No, I'm afraid we only "contact" people on the net. We "connect" only in person- no matter how much effort is put into developing webcam video phones or even "teledildonics," they will still disappoint.

Psychopaths in full bloom may band together, but rest assured, it's only to help themselves. That's why they always need to watch their backs; they know all too well how attractive backs are to knives, as they've likely stabbed a few themselves. The shrewdest of these people, the politicians, have mastered the trick of shaking your hand and stabbing you in the back at the same time, but it is a trick that soon makes one paranoid, alone, and fearful. Like an animal caught in a leghold trap, they become mean and extremely dangerous, focusing their rage toward potential rescuers instead of the jaws of the trap.

So what to do? Thornbushes have roots, so I look for them and try to pull them up if I can, in my own way. The earlier we can get to it, the easier it is to uproot. Children should be encouraged to play together instead of texting each other, to touch trees and rivers and rocks instead of clicking on them, to be made to feel a part of something bigger, something that loves them and has their back so they don't need to watch it by themselves all the time. This would help a bit, I think.

Explore the reptile brain, see and understand how it can help us survive difficult moments, and learn to put it in the proper perspective within a mind made up of many different layers of awareness. That's just old-fashioned mental discipline, which is not something a reptile mind by itself can grasp. Until our culture fundamentally changes, I think the best we can do is to help and encourage those around us to cultivate gardens of consciousness bearing fruits that sustain instead of thornbushes that pierce and draw blood. To know if I'm a garden or a briar patch, I can try a simple test: When I see someone stumble, do I help them up or do I point and laugh?

And when any of you reading this happen to cross paths with a psychopath too far gone to come back, go ahead and feel a poignant compassion for them but also do not hesitate to call on your own reptile mind and do what needs to be done to avoid being eaten. Watch a mongoose kill a cobra sometime, it's very informative.

The Village Idiot,

That post is superb. Especially the bit about getting to the root/s of the matter. Tis most important imo.

It's also good to understand the paradigm of various aspects of nature, as you've outlined them -- symbiotic, parasitic, and predatory. Also really appreciate your elucidation of the reptilian (aspect of our) brain. As well as your astute advice on how to skillfully (and compassionately) deal with a close encounter with a
psychopath. Sound indeed.
Thank you for all of it.

--------

godsend,

In response to what you wrote,

"I take it that you are inclined to disagree with the 'so help us, God' part, right?"

Actually, no.

"Let me assure you that God is part and parcel of the Whole Truth. In fact, God (Jesus the Christ) IS Truth - and Light and Life and The Way. God is also Spirit and Holy."

I wonder, why do you think/assume that you can assure me of anything? And can I now "assure" you that you sound like you're proselytizing? Somehow I think not. Btw, I do feel that God is part and parcel of the whole truth. Still, I'm not convinced that
God = Jesus the Christ, as you put it. And if you are, I have no qualms with that, for several reasons; foremost among them is that it's really none of my concern.

As for Jesus the Christ, I'm not sure whether he is/was real or myth. In any case, that doesn't matter to me. And I happen to love the words, works, and teachings
which are attributed to him. Son of God, or Son of Man? Again, I make no distinction since I regard them as the same. Imo, we're all sons and daughters of God.

Essentially I regard Jesus as a Prophet (in the briefest terms) and a really divine and loving spirit. I also regard some others as his equal (again in the simplest or
briefest terms). For example, Ghandi and Bob Marley, to name only two. Meaning that I regard them as among the greatest of people, divinely inspired, and living,
loving, benevolent spirits. There are more imo, but I won't belabour the point.

"Go back to my website and study it thoroughly - ALL of it. As you study it, makes notes on everything you SEE there that you think is NOT Truth. (that should
take around 6 months or so - if you include the links, and the links are VERY important)."

Um, no thanks. Furthermore, I first began to read 47 years ago. In this time I've learned much, including about various religions, done much, travelled a bit, have
met, love(d), and known many from many walks of life. And I've also already read about several of the things which you posted on your site, judging by the images and
headlines, etc.

6 months you say? Well, it's taken me (a lifetime of) 51 years to become who I am today, and at this juncture there are only a handful of things I know with any
certainty. One of which is that as much as I may know, all of my knowledge could fit through the eye of a needle compared to all that's likely knowable. Another thing is
that I could be wrong/mistaken about much or all that I (think I) know. ;) So, never could I claim that anything I know/feel/believe/think is the Whole Truth. So help me God!

Btw, I did not say that there are non-truths or lies on your site. So again, why the assumption? I simply stated that I find your claim to being "the ONLY website with
the WHOLE TRUTH" as incredible -- meaning off-putting, and not believable. I also find that claim to be arrogant (lacking humility), and ignorant, which completely turns me off.

You also replied:

"I know this may be a lot for you to absorb all at once..."

You know..., huh? Thanks, I do appreciate the sarcasm. Seriously, it made me laugh.

I happen to believe in God/gods/Creation/Nature (the same in my books). I believe in immortality and infinity too, even though I cannot really comprehend them. And over all, I believe in Love. I'm convinced that love is the reason why we are here. Anyhow...

I do agree with you on one note though. That it's important to shine the light on all that is keeping us down or in darkness. If that is your true intent and objective (and with that I'd wish you sincere good tidings), then you might want to reconsider your approach (your words or style for example), in light of what we're discussing here?

And so with all due respect, I must decline your offer because I don't care for the feel and look of your site (as it stands), and therefore don't care to spend any more time there. It just ain't my cup of tea.

----
Les,

I trust that this isn't detracting from the blog, hopefully it's relevant to the overall discussion. In any case, as always, do what you will with it.

Thanks again,

annemarie

Brilliantly succinct essay. Signs of the Times never ceases to find gems like this.

@Godsend:

God may be in his heaven, but if you will just open your eyes and use the brains She gifted you with, you will plainly see all is NOT right with the world. Proclaiming otherwise does not change the facts on the ground. Any god I would believe in would value our response to them far more than airy-fairy praise.

You want to "strike at the root of evil"? Educate yourself about the "human-type" beings that Les is warning us about. Read Political Ponerology (Lobaczewski), Without Conscience (Hare), The Sociopath Next Door (Stout). Then you may have a chance of doing something constructive. God(dess) certainly ain't gonna do it for you.

@ Village Idiot: Bless you, you get it!

And Les, keep up the good work. It's a pleasure to link to such fine writing.

This blog is not the place to engage in an extended 2-way debate about anything. I only answered you because you made several comments about me and my website and, in my opinion, they were based on incomplete information on your part.

My website is not everyone's cup of tea, to say the least. That's OK and is what I expect. It might interest you to know that the site has been on the Web for 10+ years and receives visitors every month from around 100 countries and between 2000-3000 extended visits (full download of 10+MB of information). Annual 'hits' are around 2 million. So there are many people who are interested in what I have to say (the site is updated regularly). Of course, that doesn't mean they agree with what I have to say! The site is linked by Ziopedia and is described as "An illustrated Guide to the Universe". It is one of the most frequently accessed links on Ziopedia. Someone else wrote that entering the site is like entering a chapel, so you see, there are many different points of view.

Since you volunteered some personal information, I'll do the same. I recently celebrated my 67th birthday and have led a peripatetic life. With just a little bit of ingenuity, anyone interested can find out quite a bit about my personal and professional life. I don't try to conceal my identity.

Let's just concentrate on exposing the extraordinary evil which is threatening humanity and support this Blog which has such an outstanding and eloquent author. One step at a time.

If you come across another site similar to mine, I'd be interested in looking at it. I'm familiar with the Texe Marrs and David J. Meyer websites. They both have messages similar to mine but very different formats.

Peace.

As a parent raising non-psychopaths in a home devoid of television and filled with love/concern, give/take, resposnibility/freedom, it never ceases to amaze me to hear people who have met them proclaim how well adjusted, kind, honest and good they are, but to "just wait" until they are grown-ups. I can never tell if they are hopeful that they will eventually succemb to and fail in this hopeless world or if they are wishing desperately to include us in their misery.

It all starts at home, period. You either abdicate your responsibility to raise and teach and inspire your children to be something better, or you allow them to revert to the Lord of the Flies reality that is our presnt culture.

Thanks again for your sage words well meant, they do in fact inspire.
